Thomas Cole was an American landscape painter and is considered the founder of the Hudson River School, a movement dedicated to depicting the majestic landscapes of North America, which also included artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Edwin Church. His works feature impressive natural motifs, characterized by untouched wilderness and dramatic scenery. He is particularly known for his famous painting cycle, The Course of Empire, which explores the rise and fall of a civilization. In addition to his artistic work, Cole deeply engaged with the significance of nature in American identity and was actively involved in numerous conservation projects.
