Mary Vaux Walcott was an American artist, naturalist, and botanist, best known for her precise and aesthetically pleasing watercolor paintings of North American wildflowers. She documented hundreds of plant species, many of them in remote and inaccessible areas of Canada and the United States. Her best known publication, North American Wild Flowers , comprises five volumes with over 400 watercolors and is considered a milestone in botanical illustration. In addition to her artistic work, Walcott was a pioneer in the scientific study of wilderness. She was one of the first women to study and document glaciers in the Rocky Mountains in the early 1900s.
